The Indian Orthodox Church (also known as the Malankara Orthodox Church, Orthodox Church of the East, Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church) is a prominent member of the Oriental Orthodox Church family in Christianity, traditionally held to be founded by St. Thomas, the Disciple of Christ in A.D. 52.
The Indian Orthodox Church is an ancient, autocephalous, independent Church whose Supreme Head is His Holiness The Catholicos of the East and Malankara Metropolitan, Baselios Marthoma Paulose II with headquarters at Catholicate Aramana, Devalokam, Kottayam, Kerala, India. The Catholicos and Malankara Metropolitan is vested with all spiritual, ecclesiastical and temporal powers over the entire Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church.
The Church’s Eucharistic Liturgy and other Sacramental Liturgies are based on the West Syrian Liturgy. The Faith and Worship of the Church is based on the theological doctrine that has been established by the three Ecumenical Councils of Nicea (A.D.325) Constantinople (A.D.381) and Ephesus (A.D.431).
St Gregorios Indian Orthodox Congregation of Glasgow has its modest beginning with a small group of people living in and around Glasgow, following a prayer meeting led by Rev. Fr. Varughese John at the residence of Mr Monittan Muthalaly on the Easter day of 2010. With the Grace of God Almighty we had our first Holy Qurbana on 15th May 2010 at Broom Church, Newton Mearns, Glasgow. The blessings and guidance from the Diocesan Bishop H.G. Dr. Mathews Mar Thimothios has indeed been a great impetus in its formation and further development of this church who appointed Rev. Fr. Varughese John as the vicar The Diocesan Metropolitan has taken special interest in the formation of this Church in Glasgow to cater the spiritual needs of the faithful living in the central belt of Scotland.
Since May 2010 regular Holy Qurbana has been conducted on the third Saturday of every month and the Church of Scotland has been extremely generous in providing their sanctuary and premises for our worship. In August 2010 the venue of worship has been shifted to Sandyhills Parish Church, Baillieston Road, Glasgow. H.G. Dr. Mathews Mar Thimothios, Diocesan metropolitan of UK, Europe and Africa did the maiden pastoral visit to the church and celebrated Holy Qurbana. His Grace has been visiting the parish every year since then and the apostolic visitation of His Grace is a source of blessings and inspiration to the people belonging to the Church.
Over a short span of few months, this church took a long leap spiritually and could attract more members into its fold with its multifarious activities as days roll on. The year 2011 witnessed the beginning of Sunday School (Bible classes for children), St Thomas prayer group and St Mary’s women’s league. The first Holy Week celebration of the church has been conducted with under the leadership of our vicar Rev. Fr. Varughese John in 2011 and therafter every year Holy Week celebrations are conducted. The patron saint of this Church is St Gregorios of Parumala and perunnal services are conducted in November of every year. The main aim of this Church is to glorify God in the way our forefathers have taught us and let God’s name be glorified more through this Church in Scotland in the years to come…...!
